Implementation of INTRADERMAL route of administration of RABIES VACCINE  (IDRV) in Andhra Pradesh.

It is a well known fact that IDRV is a cost effective method when compared to intramuscular administration of Cell Culture Vaccines (CCVs).

Huge expenditure is being incurred by the State Governments in India for procurement of CCVs. Government of Andhra Pradesh has been trying to implement IDRV since May 2006 itself.

Towards the end of 2006, procurement of CCV for IDRV was initiated. Based on the DCGI letter No.X-11026/23/05-D, dated 20-10-2006 specifying the potency of the vaccine to be administered per site as 0.5 IU or 0.7 IU, AbhayRab (PVRV) was procured for IDRV administrations. Approval, by DCGI,  of the package insert of AbhayRab for IDRV was also taken into consideration before procurement . It was decided to use updated Thai Regimen (2-2-2-0-2) for IDRV in A.P.

Institute of Preventive Medicine, Hyderabad with a huge load of more than 50,000 animal bite patients per year was selected for implementing IDRV in the first phase in the state of A.P.

On 4th June 2007, Shri Sambhani Chandrasekhar garu, the Honourable Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Government of Andhra Pradesh, inaugurated IDRV at IPM. The dignitaries present on the occasion were Shri P.K. Agarwal, Principal Secretary, Health Medical & Family Welfare, Andhra Pradesh, Dr. P. Sucharitha Murthy, Director, IPM., the Director of Health, the Director of Medical Education and others.

Shri S. Chandrasekhar garu opened the new IDRV clinic and handed over the OP Card to the first patient Mr. Shamshuddin.

Later there was a public meeting. Dr. G. Sampath welcomed the gathering and invited the dignitaries to the dais. The Hon’ble Minister, Shri S. Chandrasekhar garu highlighted importance of implementation of IDRV in making available Rabies Vaccine to more patients without any extra burden on the state exchequer  He said that there will be no shortage of Rabies Vaccine in our State.

Shri P.K.Agarwal, Principal Secretary, HM &FW, elaborated on the measures taken by the Government in prevention of diseases. Dr.P.Ramesh, Secretary, HM & FW highlighted the importance of preventive aspects of diseases.

Shri. B. Aravinda Reddy, M.D., APHMHIDC, informed that the Government was spending almost 10% of the annual budget allocated for drugs, medicines & disposables towards procurement of Rabies Vaccine. Still it was unable to meet the demand. Hence IDRV will be an excellent option to overcome the shortage and also to make available Rabies Vaccine in all Government centres.

Dr.P. Sucharitha Murthy, Director IPM, described the activities of the Institute and informed that the Institute was serving the public for the past many years and will continue to do so in the future.
